A Present for Me
Look what I came home to this evening...
Patrick finshed my umbrella swift prototype!. He brought me a ball winder for my birthday, but I really do need a swift too. I thought about getting one for Christmas, and that's when he decided to make one for me.
He's a good woodworker--I've never used a drill--but I was skeptical about the swift. He looked a photos on the web and the swift at the LYS. The other day, he brought the wood and supplies and started working on it.
Does it work? Well here's what it did.
He had already taken care of three skeins of my Nature Wool, and I finished up the fourth. it works just fine.
If you look at the first photo closely, you can see that he lashed it to the chair, and it needs a clamp, which he'll make later.
He will also put the plans for the swift on the web--which I'll link on my blog--so that those of you who are crafty with wood--or know someone who is--can make one too.
By the way, his knitting is coming along slowly, but surely, and I've taught him some crochet. He wants to make a spinning wheel, but I have no idea where we would put it in our apartment.
I think I'll keep him, though.

Absolutely most definitely a keeper though I don't think you had any doubts about it! Great job Patrick!! :o) I was just telling Rick last night that I wanted a ball winder and yarn swift but neither one of us are wood oriented so I'll end up buying one. Any chance that they are easy enough to do that he could sell some on eBay?

Thanks for all the great comments. The hardest part was getting the support slats to line up & making the grooves in the hub the right size. I am creeping along with my knitting, but my heart is really into the making of yarn from wool. I plan to make a more refined swift & spinning wheel like device. Maybe like what they use in East India? I'll post the plans & photos of the finished product later.

GREAT Swift! Way to go Patrick! Hey, any chance you want to give my hubby a call? You can tell him how cool LYS's are and that how important it is to have a swift. hehehe

Hi! I was wondering if you had the plans for that wonderful swift posted yet. If not, does anyone know where to find plans?
